What Inspired Lucky Break
Thank you so much to Mariann for having me here today.
I really appreciate it!
Whenever I'm working on a book, I'm always asked what inspired me to write it. Sometimes the story was just something I came up with out of the blue. Other times, as is the case with Lucky Break, inspiration came from something concrete.
I've always been a music fan. My parents have stories about me as a toddler walking around with a radio listening to music, or climbing on the coffee table to dance to whatever music was in my head. Some things don't change...well except for the table thing.
Several years ago, I watched an interview with Ann Wilson of Heart. In it she talked about the pressure from music video directors and others to lose weight, how her sister Nancy was pushed to be more visible, and how they would shoot video and photos of Ann from certain angles, etc. to try to make her appear thinner.
Also in this interview, Ann talked about male groupies and how no one really talks about them. Ann said that while male groupies are different than the groupie stereotype because they're quieter and sweeter (her sister, Nancy Wilson has mentioned poems and flowers), they definitely exist.
The interview got me thinking about what it would be like to be a young woman starting out and having to deal with suddenly being thrust into living in a fishbowl where people watch your every move and comment on your insecurities.
At first the story was going to be filled with the excesses of the road. The usual sex, drugs and rock n roll. These wouldn't be just what Lucky experienced, but also what she witnessed on the road. All of that changed once Jude Morrison developed.
I wanted a love interest who had been there, done that and would guide her to do the same, to get it out of her system. Kind of the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the rock world...except hot.
What happened was the Lucky I developed wasn't that sheltered woman who would blindly try anything. She was ruled more by her emotions, than by a youthful curiosity and this made her more grounded. Plus, let's be honest, she met Jude.
So what I originally planned to be an lustful journey that would lead to romance, changed to a coming of age story that led to first love.
Inspiration sometimes comes from the weirdest places, other times from the simplest. Ann Wilson's interview not only inspired Lucky Break, but I fell in love with the characters so much that I'm looking forward to revisiting some of them very soon.

Sheltered her entire life, gifted musician Olivia "Lucky" Saldano is ready to live. But hitting the road on her first tour, she's learning there's more to music than just playing--her record company wants her to lose weight and change her image. To make matters worse, they gave her no choice about her band's drummer, the person she needs to connect with most.
Veteran drummer Jude Morrison has a reputation as a hard partying womanizer and is the last person Lucky wants around, but in a world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, he might be the only person who can help her through it.
As each new city brings its challenges, Lucky finds herself fighting her attraction to the moody musician as she learns to manage the stardom that comes from a Lucky Break.
